AIAIAI MIX SERIES

CURATED BY BENJI B

AIAIAI supporting artists

We created the series to promote and compensate musicians with new weekly mix releases on Soundcloud and Mixcloud - all curated by Benji B.

In an increasingly uncertain business of being a musician DJ or performing artist we wanted to find a way to contribute to supporting the music and nightlife scene.

The effort intends to equip artists to advance their creative and performance opportunities on a global stage, as nightclubs and music venues have largely faced ongoing closures and other restrictions internationally as the COVID-19 pandemic persists.

MIX 055

ANASTASIA KRISTENSEN

Call-to-action vocals, hi-NRG synth riffs and ten-ton gabber kicks meet rave rinsers, scything electro, booming techno and even the odd rewind. Anastasia Kristensen is a poster-child for techno’s lean out of its associated black hole, and into a spectrum of colours, textures and light. After years of sharpening her reputation as a resident at Culture Box, and in particular Mainstream, one of the city’s few LGBTQ nights, her international tour diary has exploded, taking in small parties and major festivals the world over, making her a magazine cover star who remains driven by connecting communities and elevating fellow music geeks.

Remixes for artists like Special Request and Daniel Avery laid the path for deals to Warp offshoot Arcola and renowned label Houndstooth, extending the range of what Kristensen brings to the dancefloor, both as a DJ, and a producer putting records in DJ’s hands. By taking that vital first flash of energy and making it relatable, accessible and utterly infectious, Anastasia Kristensen has rapidly clicked with a great deal of people across all walks of dance music – and why she is set to keep doing so for years and years to come.

Anastasia's own words on the mix:
"This is my first mix of the year and it reflects the sounds that I’ve been digging recently and playing at my shows. Tracks full of textures, wonky rhythms and pure dance floor energy."

SEF KOMBO & KITTY AMOR

Sef Kombo and Kitty Amor are two of the key protagonists in London’s flourishing Afro House scene; working tirelessly over the last 13 years both individually and collectively to build a name and exposure for the sounds they are passionate about.

Sef created his highly popular brand Til Two in 2009, establishing a firm foothold in London and surrounding areas as the place to absorb the best and more forward thinking music electronic music from Africa, whilst Kitty in 2016 alongside Jonny Miller & D-Malice started Motherland in Grow, Hackney where it still takes place until this day: a intimate night that unearths the more underground and new House sounds coming from the continent.

Now Sef & Kitty head up Motherland as well as Sessions as their residencies, which Mixmag recognises as “inspiring representation of the diversity of the city’s black community… with its jubilant and celebratory atmosphere.”

Sef and Kitty's own words on the mix:
"The mix is a reflection of our time in Africa, we absorbed all different types of energies and expressions of sounds from the day to day life in the Motherland, from the different parts of Jozi, to Durban to Nairobi to Accra and hitting Cape Town the different flavours taught us new and different ways to approach the sounds we are really passionate about and to continuously keep an open mind and ear to what is coming out of the continent in the House space. The amazing consistency keeps us very excited about the future of music from Africa."

MARIE MONTEXIER

Born in Germany with French origin, Marie Montexier’s preferred format as a DJ is vinyl, a crucial part of why she began DJing and collecting music. Curious about genres and styles, multi-eclectic influences informs her sound. Her sets, mainly based on breakbeat and big on UK flavour, are global melting pots where genres and edges blur; oldskool acid, tribal-scented beats and trippy techno merge here. Marie brings a twisted quirkiness, lightening up a sometimes harsh-sounding corner of the scene.

Although new in the industry, Marie Montexier’s hard work has not gone by unnoticed: during her debut year of 2019, she was selected “Newcomer of the Year” by German music institution Groove Magazin, an honor for any artist. Since then, Marie went on to play venues across Europe, including the likes of Berghain and Fabric, and currently holds a residency at internationally renowned party Warning, taking place in Berlin.

Marie Montexier's own words on the mix:
"This only vinyl mix is a club mix from summer 2021, a time when we had the chance to experience club culture together again. Usually I’m more into breaks, bass and techno but here I bring a lot of power house and acid into the mix. And don't be too sad, winter is here but summer will come again and we will be able to dance together again. Until then, enjoy the time with the music at home. - x"

FRANK BOOKER

Frank Booker has quietly built a worldwide reputation for incredible edits and DJ sets. His releases have gained huge support from heavy hitting disco and house DJs such as Horse Meat Disco, Todd Terje, Rahaan, Detroit Swindle, Session Victim, Red Greg, Jimpster, DJ Nature and many more.

When DJing, his music spans a wide array of quality black dance music: From deepest disco, to 80's boogie and cutting edge house music, as well as special re-edits all put together with a focus firmly on the dancers. Keep on!

Frank Booker's own words on the mix:
"I put this mix together using my trusty Condesa Lucia Mixer, a Pioneer EFX-1000 unit and two CDJs. I wanted to showcase soulful, melodic dance music whether new or old. Chloe Lula's own words on the mix:
"I’ve been leaning hard into non-4/4 rhythms over the last year or so, and this mix is really a showcase of the kind of music that’s been really inspiring to me (electro, breaks, DnB, jungle. etc.) I’m especially into artists who are able to meld these genres with dark industrial and EBM tropes, which is definitely the direction I see my music moving in!"

JASPER JAMES

Jasper James’ career has come a long way since his arrival on the scene as one of the youngest DJs to play the legendary Sub Club. Emerging from his roots as a leading tastemaker in Glasgow’s vibrant house scene and breaking away from his peers to become more than just a ‘one-to-watch’ but a respected figure in his own right. A DJ and producer with talent that stretches beyond his years, he’s crafted and developed his own brand of off-kilter house and heads-down techno through extended DJ sets at some of the world's most respected clubs including DC10, Fabric, The Warehouse Project, Smartbar, Blitz, Lux, Bobbeaman and of course, Sub Club.

Jasper James' own words on the mix:
"I wanted to record this mix as if I was playing out in a club setting, which I’m just getting back into the swing of. I kept it live and raw sounding. I let the tracks pick themselves as I go, which I would do when I DJ out. The mix features some new and old records as well as some upcoming music from myself being released next month. ANTAL

As a DJ and ‘musicologist’, there are few more serious than Antal. Trying to sum up the musical world of the Rush Hour founder with a few loose signifiers like house or techno would be futile.

Sure, everyone in the industry claims to have been music obsessives since youth, but few have taken it as far as this Dutchman. As a DJ who prefers proper tools like E&S or Rane rotary mixers and Dope Real isolators, since 1996 he has played all across Europe, Australia, Asia and both North and South America. Unlike many, though, he has a wealth and depth of music to call on that is so vast you never quite know what you are going to get: he is as comfortable spinning Chicago and Detroit influenced house as he is rare Afro funk, forgotten disco and everything in between.

Antal's own words on the mix:
"Just back from the Selectors Festival and Maiden Voyage festival in London, I finally had the chance again to DJ for an actual real audience. It was so much fun I am still feeling it. This was something I was really missing the last months.

So still in the mood, I was just spinning some tunes in the music room at a midtempo and at the same time I was thinking about the headphone experience and what would be nice to hear, so I went for the more clean and clear productions - but like always, eventually I am turning it around (this time to Brazilian music) for a few bits, only to get out of it again with some other sounds... anyways: all from the heart."

FJAAK

German electronic duo FJAAK produce driving, energetic dance tracks which range from reflective power house to storming warehouse techno, with occasional U.K. garage, dub, and breakbeat hardcore influences. Gritty yet sensual, their tracks are composed entirely on analog equipment.

Based in Berlin, Felix Wagner and Aaron Röbig had been making music together since childhood before they began producing techno as FJAAK during the late 2000s, while they were still teenagers. In 2021 they began to focus on their own labels: "FJAAK" and "SPANDAU20" which release schedules are tightly packed already!

FJAAK's own words on the mix:

You can always expect an eclectic selection with a soulful feel, either from his DJ sets or his NTS Radio show.

Selassie TBC's own words on the mix:
"I wanted this mix to be a bit more dance focussed than my radio shows. I usually take a laid back approach on NTS, so took this as an opportunity to express myself in a different way and delve into a couple sounds and pockets that people may not necessarily know me for. Starts familiar, but goes to eventually goes elsewhere - it's all part of my musical taste. Plus end of lockdown is on the horizon (in the UK) so let's turn it up a bit."

MIX CONTEST

WINNER MIRA

Benji B on her mix:
I´m going to go with Mira´s guest mix and the reason that I found Mira´s guest mix really interesting was because it had a lot of feeling, a lot of groove to it and it was in a very specific zone. Different to a lot of the mixes in terms of tempo and content, and pretty much 100% of the music I hadn’t heard before.  It was put together in a way that would suit a dancefloor session but would also suit a late night/sunrise moment, but equally could have you just vibing in your kitchen or your front room at the same time, which is exactly where I was when I was listening to it.  Mira´s mix kept making my ears prick up, and more importantly making me move, and I just thought it was very really well put together and confident in its style and delivery.

Mira's own words on the mix:
I’ve been playing music for six years now and with all that madness in 2020 I got an opportunity to go deeper into listening and searching for music, especially not popular music. I started producing myself and expanding my taste in music. I started to listen to a lot of new genres and styles, sometimes I can fall in love with a track only because of it's percussion or bassline. Working on a mix for me - is always an opportunity to share not commonly known music, interesting music. I want to show my listeners that electronic music can be easy to listen to, it can make your day or it may be a good soundtrack for anything: work, walk or doing nothing. And it's always like one long track, one mood, but eclectic, like a room full of different furniture but looking great together. This is a small part of my music vision.

Last year was very hard, but the time spent with yourself is a gift and it can be priceless.

No frames, more freedom in life, freedom in making music, more new openings in 2021. Music is friend, life and passion.

Words from Lou on the mix:
'In lockdown I went back to some of the house music that’s influenced me most in my life like the Moodymann album ‘A Silent Introduction’ which sounds so good at the moment. This is a mix of that soulful New York/ Detroit house sound that I love like Pal Joey and Dream 2 Science and those producers who are still making incredible records right now like Theo Parrish, it feels like a sound of then and now at the same time which I love.'

MANARÉ

MIX 035

This mix is a journey exploring / showcasing the different emotions I’ve been going through during lockdown.

As a dance-music mix didn’t feel right in such a standstill era, this selection is mostly composed of contemplative cuts.

As weird as it sounds, I’ve - lately - realized how much of an obsession I had for intros, outros, interludes or just beat-less tracks :

The inspirations behind this work finds its roots in this obsession.

This piece also acts as a moodboard + my first research towards future productions, experimenting around an ambient music filled with jazz / nu-soul chords.

In a way, this mix is a hunt for the perfect interlude, a compilation of sometimes short, sometimes long intermissions forming a new whole filled with imperfections.

It has also been inspired by a discussion with my good friend Zainab Jama, music swap with my friend Maxine, the discovery of Diggs Duke and the ever going research of a common thread and consistance between the different sounds I equally love.

RICH MEDINA

MIX 034

For the past two decades, Rich Medina has cemented his reputation as an elite DJ, one of few on the planet capable of taking audiences worldwide on a sonic journey through hip-hop, house, soul, afrobeat, funk, breaks and dance classics.

HAAi

MIX 33

A need for experimentation, exploring new sounds and new ways of making music – the inspiration driving Mute’s recent signing HAAi, the Australian-born London-based DJ who continues an incredible couple of years with two releases on the prestigious label

Her own words on the mix:

I wanted to make a 4x4 club mix for this as I’m really missing it all and wanted to play some techno. It’s peppered with a bunch of unreleased tracks by myself that I’ve been playing round with during lockdown.

Loads of  unreleased tunes in there some by well known and some by up and coming artists that have been getting me through recently.

Enjoy <3

GE-OLOGY

MIX 032

The virtuoso known as GE-OLOGY is a rare find. The gifted music producer, and exceptionally skilled DJ has been acclaimed for over two decades where he's worked with the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott and De La Soul, and he's done a very special mix for the 32nd edition of our Mix series!

TRACKLIST: From the personal collection.

GE-OLOGY's own words on the mix:
What a year 2020 has been. In various ways, it uprooted so many of our lives and brought us into this temporary new age of social distancing...essential to fighting the pandemic, but unnatural in comparison to the social norms, habits and behaviors we had previously been used to. With social gatherings severely restricted, it has forced us into our own imagination to find new ways to feed our souls the human touch and intermingling we thirst for, but once took for granted. In response, Zoom video conferencing parties have become a thing, as well as live DJ sets on Instagram and Twitch. But with this explosion of live performances from the comforts of ones home to ours, it's still not a comparable substitute for the deep and beautiful culture of live music performances in small smoky bars, or steamy basement parties, or crowded arenas packed with a sea of people, or club nights headlining our favorite DJs...or even traveling to exotic music festivals in foreign outdoor lands.

With this in mind, I took some time to reflect on so many of the priceless experiences I've been fortunate enough to enjoy over such a significant portion of my lifetime so far...and I couldn't be more grateful. The love and dedication I hold deep in my soul for music, and the art of DJing stems from my appreciation of the brilliant musicians who created compositions that spoke to me, funky rhythms that moved me naturally, and skillful creative Disc Jockeys that knew how to tell stories through vinyl records like literary masters use words in poetry. This love, most-importantly, stems back to my family, and how music has played such an important role in all of our lives. It's directly connected to many of my greatest childhood memories, and has helped to shape me into the person I am today.

In honor of my family, as well as my extended music family around the world, and the great legacy of live music and club nights that so many of us miss, I wanted to do something very special with this mix. I decided to approached this from various angles...building it up gradually as I would playing 'all-nght-long' at my residency club night in NYC, with a lot of rare, funky and beautiful records from my collection, some very pricey these days...some inexpensive, taking the listener on an extensive 2 hour (120 mins + 20 secs) sonic journey of beautiful melodies, rhythms, voices and instrumentation, with some old school style "A cappella" blends, intersecting various genres from Hip Hop to Soul to Jazz-Funk to Gospel to Disco to pure African dance floor HEAT! Definitely one of my favorite and most fun mixes I've recorded over the years. Food for the heart and soul. ENJOY!

DJ KRUST

MIX 031

Born in Bristol, the co-founder of Full Cycle crew, DJ Krust is much noted in the jungle underground for his push-the-envelope productions, and is a name that has become synonymous with the foundation and early evolution of jungle and drum & bass culture.

in his own words:
It should’ve been obvious but we missed the details. What was the truth behind the truth behind the real story that was the question that was on everybody’s mind,

It was a phantom and an illusion that was manifested deep in the mind of creators, we couldn’t penetrate it so we decided to innovate but that approach soon reached its limit.

It wasn’t until we discovered the information at the bottom of an audio signal that was self correcting. The dimensions were at 300 dB they might as well have been buried underneath 100 tons of concrete, they bear no resemblance to audible codes that we could use however

This was a breakthrough and we were grateful and now many people will be able to audibly distinguish between light frequencies and the dynamic assertion of language and I have the interpretation that it’s now believable but only in headphones.

So I invite you with a request from the centre of the eye to take part in this experience.

Thank you for your commitment.

Starting with none other than Larry Heard the G.O.A.T. giving the best runway to the rest of the mix. Slowly moving thru tracks from Dukesoul (RIP), live UK band Soul State Jazz into Paul Hunter aka Second Crusade let's you know the groove is there.
Jovonn shows us why he is the truth with his classic remix of St. Germain hit "Rose Rouge", Bobby Konders take on Herb Alpert's "North On South St" was NYC Late night burner from early 90's, into the future with myself & Hanna with a little unreleased tribute to lost heroes Notorious B.I.G., Mike Huckaby & J Dilla
